You Have to Plan to Be Successful

*** Did you order your turkey? If no, go do it now. If yes, nice work.***

You have to plan to be successful. That bears repeating. You have to plan to be successful.

But who’s got the time? That’s where we come in. I am hosting Thanksgiving this year and that’s what I need to be planning and working on this week – not dinner. This week is full of One Stop Dishes – meat, veggies and grains all in one dish. There are great prep ahead opportunities and minimal clean up too.

***Did you run your tablecloth to the drycleaner? Go put it in the car.***

Years ago, I hosted my first Thanksgiving dinner and it was a hit! I hunted down all our favorite recipes from Moms, Dads, Aunts and Grammies.  Everyone was very well represented. But, the very best thing that I did was to create a Thanksgiving folder for all of the recipes and my 3-day timeline. Now, every year, I just pull it out and follow along.  A planned success!

***Do you need extra dining chairs? Better round them up now.***

Listen, I hate to burst any bubbles out there, but as your kids get older, it doesn’t get any easier - just busier. They do become less chore heavy for sure, but now they want to help. I thought I would love this but, Man, they are in my way! So, to help me keep my cool, I have gone through my Thanksgiving folder and made lists of prep work that they each can do. Think: cutting veggies, make place cards, pick leaves for the table, polish the silver, etc. Everybody gets a list! Another planned success!

***Add extra bread, pasta, fruit, and snacks to your Shopping List - they will all be home next week. Better add more wine too!***

Thanksgiving is my chance to enjoy my whole family in my world – the kitchen. It’s where we can slowdown, taste, learn about where food comes from, pass on our life lessons, practice math, taste some more, listen to music, talk about the food we ate as kids, try new things, slow down some more, make mistakes, start over, ….be together. That’s my idea of success.

Enjoy this final week of peace before break and make a plan to successfully relish your time with the whole crew next week.
