Now Casting Thanksgiving Auditions

2012-11-09 | 3 comments

I love this time of year! Thanksgiving is just around the corner and it’s time to breakout all those treasured recipes. While it makes me homesick for New England, my family table and those traditions, I cook as many of those dishes as possible. But, as many of us do, I want to represent my husband’s traditions as well as my own.  Thank God we have bourbon in common!

This planning is always a challemge as I want to try new things but my family is counting on the classics – Great Gram’s squash, Mom’s cranberry relish, mashed potatoes and of course the bird. So, I like to try one new dish each year. They aren’t all asked back next year. Chestnut dressing-flop. Creamed oysters-huge flop. Carrot Ginger Soup-hit!

I have included two hits – one old, one new – in this week’s plan. My Gram’s Butternut Squash is simple and a preparation that you can try on other firm squashes. The Carrot Ginger Soup is a great make-ahead recipe that is a perfect first course at Thanksgiving. Both are portable too!

I hope that you will take advantage of the Tuesday/Thursday combo. This time of year is hectic – do kids ever go to a full week of school? Give yourself a break.

Head’s Up: next week’s Plan will be Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday only. I figure that you are all set on Thursday.
